From growing up with a great love of nature, being deeply unhappy at school, drawing at a young age though showing little sign of any special artistic talent and leaving school around age 13. Then, tried different jobs becoming the youngest clerk at an art dealer at age 16 to schoolmaster, then lay preacher searching for a calling…
To heeding the advice of his younger brother, Theo who suggested Vincent concentrate on his drawing. Theo began to support him financially from time to time. Van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes, delusions, depression and poverty throughout his career neglecting his physical health not eating properly and drinking heavily. In a decade, he created about 2,100 works of art, including 860 oil paintings -most of which date from the last two years of his life. Vincent was not commercially successful during his lifetime. However, it was the championing of his brother and his sister-in-law Johanna after their respective deaths publishing Van Gogh's letters that would reach worldwide fame. Vincent's works are among the world's most expensive paintings in the world, many sold for over US$100 Million (inflation-adjusted). The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam regularly receives millions of visitors annually. Van Gogh is considered one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of art.
