--Legendary Scottish Physician and Microbiologist.

From losing his father when he was seven and earning a two-year scholarship to Kilmarnock Academy. Then, later enrolling at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School after his brother suggested he should follow his career…

To serving in the London Scottish Regiment of the Volunteer Force from 1900 to 1914 and becoming assistant bacteriologist to his mentor Sir Almoth Wright, a pioneer in vaccine therapy and immunology. Fleming served in WWI and was promoted to Captain in 1917 working in battlefield hospitals at the Western Front in France. At St. Mary's Hospital, Alexander eventually discovers antibiotics including: lysozyme, penicillin and antibiotic resistance. Fleming was knighted for his scientific achievements in 1944. In 1945, he shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain. In 1999, he was named amongst the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century by Time Magazine. In 2002, he was named among the 100 Greatest Britons. In 2009, he was voted third "greatest Scot" in an STV opinion poll behind only Robert Burns and William Wallace.
