From being a spectator to war at 9 years old, where his father brought Hannibal to a sacrificial chamber and was held over a roaring fire. Being held over the fire, he was sworn by Hamilcar, his father, to "never be a friend of Rome..."
To eventually becoming commander-in-chief a few years after his Father drowned in battle and was distinguished for his ability to determine both his -as well as that of his enemy's respective strengths and weaknesses -in order to exploit them in battle. His strategies allowed him to conquer several Italian cities allied to Rome. Even his sworn enemies, the Romans, would adopt elements of his military tactics into their own battle strategies. Military academies all over the world continue to study Hannibal's exploits. Hannibal Barca is regarded as one of the greatest military tacticians and leaders in history.
